Ear Infection Services at Online Urgent Care
What is this?
An ear infection (also known as otitis) occurs when an organism, most commonly a bacteria or virus, causes inflammation of the outer, middle, or inner ear. An infection of the outer ear is called an otits externa. A middle ear infection is known as an otitis media. When the inner ear is infected it’s known as an otitis interna.
What are the symptoms?
An otitis is usually very painful, sometimes contributing to headaches or other referred pain such as a sore throat on the side of the earache. Balance can sometimes be affected, more commonly with an inner or middle ear infection.
Can it be treated?
Otitis externa and media are usually treated with antibiotic ear drops or other ear preparations which help to reduce pain and swelling. Otits interna due to bacterial infections are treated with oral antibiotics.
