What is this?

Bacteria, such as streptococcus and staph aureus, normally live on our skin. But we don’t get infected by them normally because our skin is intact and healthy. However, if our skin breaks or becomes unhealthy, we invite these opportunistic occupants to invade our skin and fester in the soft tissue beneath. That’s called a cellulitis—a potentially serious infection of the skin and soft tissue structures below.

What are the symptoms?

Cellulitis causes the skin to redden, swell, itch, hurt, and feel hot and tender to touch. Sometimes, the skin oozes a transparent yellowish discharge, or an opaque whitish discharge from the open wound. Systemic symptoms such as fever, chills, nausea or vomiting are not usual with cellulitis unless it’s a very bad case.

Can it be treated?

A mild case of cellulitis can be treated with topical applications an over-the-counter pain products. But more serious cases of cellulitis will have to be addressed systemically, either by oral or intravenous antibiotics.
